MSHA Part 48(b) New Miner Training is an introductory course for newly employed inexperienced miners or individual contractors conducting work at a mine site. This 24-hour course provides comprehensive instruction of all required MSHA topics except "Introduction to work environment." Students will be required to complete this portion at the first mine site that they will conduct work at to complete the New Miner Training.
Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, 48.25 (b)(7): Introduction to work environment shall include a visit and tour of the mine, or portions of the mine which are representative of the entire mine. The method of mining or operation utilized shall be observed and explained.

Outcomes
Upon completion of the 24-hour MSHA Part 48(b) New Miner Training, participants will receive an MSHA Form 5000-23 that is marked incomplete. Completion of Introduction to the Work Environment, which consists of a mine tour, at the first mine location where work will be performed is still required. Once the Introduction to the Work Environment is completed, your New Miner Training will be considered fully complete.
