MSHA Part 48 Instructor Training Course

Required for operations regulated under 30 CFR Part 48, this course is designed for safety directors, managers, and mine operators to conduct in-house training. Participants will explore adult learning principles, lesson planning, presentation techniques, and MSHA training requirements to strengthen their knowledge, skills, and effectiveness as mine safety instructors. This course, along with the required experience, is a requirement to apply for MSHA Approved Instructor status. 

Part 46 instructors may also attend to improve their instructional skills and broaden their MSHA training knowledge, regardless of Part 48 approval goals.

Course Outline

Bring to class: Laptop, Completed MSHA Instructor Application, Current Resume, Previous 5000-23s, Degrees and Certifications 

Day One: Introduction, Part 46/48 Training Requirements, Adult Learning Principles, Lesson Planning

Day Two: Five-minute Presentations, Presentation Skills, Evaluation, Preparation for 15-minute Presentations

Day Three: Final Exam, 15-minute Presentations, Student Reviews, Conclusion

Participants should expect homework assignments that include lesson planning and the development of training materials.

Prerequisites for Becoming a Part 48 Approved MSHA Instructor

Students applying for MSHA Instructor Certification need to have the following minimum experience and credentials required by MSHA's South-Central District:

(1) Minimum three years of verifiable mining experience within the past five years. This experience must be directly related to mining under the jurisdiction of MSHA. 

(2) Completed MSHA Part 48 New Miner Training and Part 48 Annual Refresher Training as required. Proof of training will require the presentation of 5000-23s. 

(3) Completed the MSHA Instructor Training Course (this course) from an acceptable and MSHA approved training resource.

(4) Submit an MSHA Instructor application with a (Miner Individual Identification Number), resume of mining experience, MSHA Instructor Training Certificate, and all 5000-23s for consideration of approval.

Outcomes

Participants who successfully complete the instructor training course and are approved by their respective MSHA District Office will be recognized as a MSHA Approved Instructor and can conduct MSHA Part 48 training.
