The MSHA Part 48 Instructor Training Course is a prerequisite course to become a MSHA Approved Instructor. The approved instructor certification is a requirement for those operations that fall under the Title 30 CFR Part 48 for surface mines, surface areas of underground mines and underground mines. MSHA qualifications, requirements, and approval are necessary to become an Approved Instructor. Review and approval will come directly from the MSHA District Office in which you are employed under.

Course Outline

Bring to class:Completed MSHA Instructor Application Form, Personal Resume, Laptop.

Day One:Introduction, Part 46/48 Training Requirements, Adult Learning Principles, Lesson Planning.

Day Two:Five-minute Presentations, Presentation Skills, Evaluation, Preparation for 15-minute Presentations.

Day Three:Final Presentation Assistance, 15-minute Presentations, Review, Final Test.

Participants should expect brief homework assignments consisting of lesson planning and training material development.

Outcomes

Participants who successfully complete the instructor training course and are approved by their respective MSHA District Office will be recognized as a MSHA Approved Instructor and can conduct MSHA Part 48 training.

Prerequisites

Students applying for MSHA Instructor certification need to have the following minimum experience and credentials required by South Central District Management:

(1)Minimum of three years of verifiable mining experience within the past five years. This experience must be directly related to mining under the jurisdiction of MSHA. 

(2)The applicant must have completed MSHA Part 48 New Miner Training, and Part 48 Annual Refresher Training as required, and be current with all MSHA Part 48 training requirements.  Evidence of the training will require the presentation of 5000-23’s. 

(3)The applicant must submit an MSHA Instructor application and resume of mining experience for consideration of approval. The application and resume should focus on relevant mining experience.

(4)The applicant must complete the required instructor training course(This Course) from an acceptable and MSHA approved training resource.
