The Health and Safety Training Center (HSTC) at the University of Texas at Austin is at the forefront of providing the mining industry, both in Texas and nationally, with world-class safety education and training.
The recipient of the Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) grant for the State of Texas since 1987, HSTC’s MSHA Grant for Texas was renewed this fall. The grant awarded to Texas is the largest per state in the U.S. and is intended to help provide safety compliance training to the Texas mining industry.
In utilizing the grant, HSTC supports organizations such as the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association on the state and national level, provides routine training to mining personnel across Texas and participates in the South Central Joint Mine Health and Safety Conference.
The past year has been a very busy time for HSTC. In addition to the required trainings implemented, HSTC officially released in October 2022 an educational documentary about the mining industry titled “We Are Miners.”, in collaboration with Castleview Productions. The documentary focuses on the global benefits of mining, opportunities within the industry, adherence to safety protocols, technological advancements that have evolved and how vital supporting this industry is to our collective future.
The documentary received the Blue Ribbon Award from the Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Training Resources Applied to Mining (TRAM) and will be showcased across mining conferences nationally to educate and enlighten individuals on the impact of the mining industry. Since being released, the documentary has had 7,500 views on YouTube and has been shared across the industry. HSTC has now received the Blue Ribbon Award twice, accompanying their previous 2019 award for their First Aid for the Mining Industry Video.
