About Us

About Us

Since 1987, the Health and Safety Training Center at The University of Texas at Austin has provided safety and health compliance training to the Texas mining industry as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) State Grants recipient of Texas. Throughout the years the name has evolved and was most recently known as the Texas Mine Safety and Health Program.

As a grant funded program, the Health and Safety Training Center is responsible for providing safety and health training and a variety of other services to improve the conditions of mine safety and health within Texas.

In addition to providing mine safety compliance training, the Health and Safety Training Center is continuously expanding to provide safety and health training for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance, Electrical Safety, Certification Exam Prep for safety professionals, MSHA Underground Mine Safety compliance, and expanded First Aid/CPR offerings.

Development of course offerings and subject matter topics will be continuous as we strive to provide safety and health training applicable to all industries and individuals. Safe production continues to be our priority as we work to prevent on-the-job injuries, accidents and fatalities across Texas, the United States and internationally.

Associations/Recognition

In 2011, the program was recognized by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for twenty-five years of providing quality health and safety training for miners and contractors in the State of Texas.

In order to further reinforce organizational safety cultures and to continue to develop strong, positive attitudes towards safety and health, the Health and Safety Training Center staff members are Council Officers for the Texas Chapter of the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association. The association provides networking and mentorship to the mining industry in Texas and coordinates an annual conference for mining professionals and contractors.

In addition, the staff is also involved with the planning and coordination of the South Central Joint Mine Health and Safety Conference. This regional conference services the states of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico and Missouri. Since 2010, the Health and Safety Training Center has been an authorized affiliated Medic First Aid Training Center.
